The Ivins City Council authorized staff to finalize an agreement to provide a School Resource Officer (SRO) at Vista School, with the school district expected to cover the majority of salary and benefits.
Police leadership outlined three options required by state House Bill 84: a guardian program, private armed security, or an SRO program. The recommended SRO option would be staffed by a new officer split across duties; Vista agreed in principal to cover roughly 80% of annual salary and benefits. The city’s portion was presented as roughly $25,000 for the partial year (prorated) and about $101,848 as the estimated total annual cost for a full year; the city’s immediate FY cost for the partial term was estimated at about $12,731.
Council moved to approve the agreement with the city attorney authorized to make immaterial edits so long as material terms (cost and duties) were unchanged; the motion passed unanimously.
Chief said the SRO would help with school safety and be available to assist on traffic and operational concerns around Vista. Because the school has not yet formally executed the final contract, council allowed minor non‑substantive edits through the city attorney.
