County backs Connected Marietta, FLEDA grant bids and signs on to Hune Bridge funding paperwork

The Washington County commissioners on Feb. 12 approved a letter of support naming the county as the direct recipient for a 2026 BUILD Discretionary Grant application for the Connected Marietta project, which aims to improve safety and multimodal connections between Marietta College, Historic Harmar Village and the central business district.
Commissioners also approved a separate letter of support for the Frontier Local Economic Development Association (FLEDA) to apply for ARC READY funding to build internal capacity and support economic development in eastern Washington County. Commissioner Charlie L. Schilling said FLEDA has been part of the community for many years.
Separately, the board authorized the County Engineer to sign any documents necessary to receive state capital project funds from the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission (OFCC) allocated in 2019 for the Hune Covered Bridge rehabilitation and asked the Prosecutor to execute related legal agreements. County Engineer Roger Wright told the board OFCC officials confirmed the 2019 funds remain available and eligible for the bridge project.
All three items passed on unanimous roll calls. The Connected Marietta project was described as a collaboration among Washington County, the City of Marietta, Marietta College and regional partners; commissioners did not debate the project specifics during the Feb. 12 meeting.
