County council approves $25,000 JDAI appropriation for youth center equipment

Lindsay Grossnickle asked the Whitley County Council on May 6 to approve a $25,000 additional appropriation from leftover juvenile detention alternatives initiative (JDAI) funding to replace equipment at the Whitley County Youth Center, which suffered extensive fire damage last summer.
Grossnickle said the Department of Corrections notified the county that $25,000 would be awarded and that the county needs to appropriate the funds so the center can spend the money and be reimbursed. She said much of the center's damage was covered by insurance but replacement costs exceeded the insured value.
The council discussed timing and reimbursement procedures. A council member asked how the center could spend the money by June 30 if the contract and reimbursement paperwork arrive late; Grossnickle said the center would purchase the equipment up front and submit receipts later for reimbursement.
A motion to approve the additional appropriation and accompanying resolution was made, seconded and passed unanimously; the council recorded the outcome as passed with all members present.
The appropriation is designated for equipment replacement; the council and county staff said the contract processing was underway and that the county will complete required paperwork before funds are distributed or reimbursed.
