Athens County weighs sealed bids, short-term leasing for Nelsonville county building after auction draws no bidders

Administrators flagged statutory advertising and disposition requirements; Administrator JoAnn Rockhold was asked to verify the legal advertising period required for selling county real property.
Commissioners acknowledged they prefer not to be long-term landlords but were open to short-term leasing to offset carrying costs while the county solicits bids. Potential interim tenants discussed included veterans-related groups and local nonprofits; the administrator will canvass state partners and identify swing space.
A stakeholder meeting was scheduled for Jan. 14 to gauge agency interest in the Nelsonville space. The board directed staff to pursue sealed bids, verify legal steps, and report back on leasing options and statutory requirements before further action.
