Athens County awards 510 W. Union sale and approves transportation grant applications

On the same agenda the board authorized Planner Connor LaVelle to apply for two transportation grants. LaVelle was approved to pursue a $200,000 application to the Buckeye Hills Regional Council Surface Transportation Block Grant program (no local match required) and to apply for an ODOT Safe Routes to School grant with the intent to request the full $1 million available. Both motions passed by unanimous vote.
Commissioner Chris Chmiel said the board had evaluated other earmark possibilities and noted consultant input preferred a truck-rebuild project for federal funding over repainting a water tower. Commissioner Lenny Eliason expressed caution about pursuing projects that would not receive funding until the next fiscal year.
Bids acknowledged earlier in the meeting included one HVAC courthouse/annex bid from Debra-Kuempel (base $1,087,000) with alternates; commissioners said staff would contact the bidder for scope clarifications and return with a recommendation.
Next steps: county staff will proceed to satisfy contingencies for the 510 W. Union sale and Planner LaVelle will prepare the grant applications and any required supporting materials.
