City wins Wege award for Ox Creek work, receives $4,000 contribution

The City of Benton Harbor has received the Wege Small City Sustainability Best Practices Award for its Ox Creek restoration and revitalization project, and the award includes a $4,000 contribution to support the effort.
Dane Rasmussen of the city's planning and economic development office read the announcement and said the city can apply the funds to Ox Creek Corridor improvements. "This award can be put towards that project or other amenities in the Ox Creek corridor," Rasmussen said, adding the city is awaiting final terms for how the contribution can be used.
Commissioners asked staff whether the money could support a proposed splash pad; City Manager Alex Little said he is pursuing additional funding with the Michigan Economic Development Corporation and private partners to cover larger capital costs. "I'm working on a project to try to get funding for our splash pad," Little said.
The commission offered congratulations during the meeting and several members noted the award could help leverage further investment in parks and creek restoration.
