Frankfort — After discussion about a January alarm and subsequent repair costs, Franklin County Fiscal Court authorized an extended protection warranty and service contract for the jail generator.
Major LeMay told the court the generator — purchased in March 2021 as part of ESG work — triggered an alarm on Jan. 14 and required about $10,000 in emergency repairs. The unit has limited parts availability from the prior maintenance contractor, so staff solicited proposals from Caterpillar (Cat) and reported two contract options: a platinum warranty (covers the machine for up to 20 years in three‑year increments and includes loaner equipment) and a service contract. The platinum warranty was described as approximately $400 per year more than the service contract but includes broader coverage and loaner units if the machine cannot be repaired promptly.
Members questioned past warranty lengths and the piece of equipment’s remaining lifespan; Major LeMay said the unit is tested regularly and was inspected by Cat engineers before the warranty was offered. The court approved the contract by voice vote.
