Students showcase athletics and robotics at board meeting; parent urges intervention in performing-arts dispute

Student board representative Lily (speaker 5) opened the student report with upcoming events at Fountain Valley, Edison, Huntington Beach, Marina, Westminster and Ocean View high schools, highlighting theater, color guard, film and art exhibits. A group of students presenting under the "Baron" team banner (speakers 6, 7 and another student who self-identified) spoke about how wrestling training fosters skills — technique, perseverance, time management, goal-setting and recovery — that they said transfer to classroom learning. Liam Qureshi (speaker 6) told the board, "Taking ownership of our own training is the key to success," and the students said season dates and commitments helped them balance athletics and academics.
During public comment, a parent introduced by the board as Rebecca Ishii (speaker 8) asked the board to intervene in a performing-arts situation and said her daughter "comes home miserable every night," that a planned New York trip was canceled and that seniors had lost pieces and morale. The commenter asked the board to try to "salvage this final experience" for affected seniors. The board president responded that staff would follow up and that the commenter should leave a copy of the materials for district staff to review.
Later public commenters praised the district's CTE and robotics pathways; one speaker reported that the Barons placed highly in local competitions, won awards, and were recognized at regional events including a SoFi Stadium STEM demonstration and a UCI-created award. The speaker thanked district staff and CTE partners for supporting student opportunities.
