The Historic Landmark Commission voted May 6 to release a demolition permit for the circa‑1924 bungalow at 507 Park Boulevard in the Hancock neighborhood, provided the owners complete a City of Austin documentation package. The motion passed with eight votes in favor, one opposed and one abstention.
Architect Bart Watley and owners Andy Schultz and his wife described structural issues, a heritage pecan tree undermining the front porch and water pooling at the foundation, and accessibility and cost concerns that led them to seek demolition rather than an extensive renovation. "The heritage pecan tree at the front of the building is a significant problem to preserving the facade," owner Andy Schultz said, describing cracked skirting and pooling water that have likely caused termite damage.
Commissioners acknowledged the home's craftmanship and historic value but said the lot configuration and the tree complicate feasible rehabilitation. Several commissioners urged the owners to consider retaining the front portion of the house or salvaging original materials for reuse. One commissioner suggested deconstruction and material salvage, noting original windows, doors and brackets may be irreplaceable.
The permit was released with the condition that the owner provide a City documentation package before demolition proceeds. The commission encouraged the owner to explore reuse, deconstruction, or moving portions of the house, and requested the applicant consider design options that would maintain street‑facing massing and materials if replacement occurs.
