The Lufkin City Council recognized scholarship recipients from the Tino Villasana Lufkin Fire Department scholarship fund, presented a plaque to outgoing Councilmember Adam Lowther, and administered the oath of office to newly seated Councilmember William Price during the regular meeting.
City officials said the Tino Villasana scholarship provides awards to dependents of active and retired Lufkin firefighters who are enrolled full time at accredited colleges, junior colleges, senior colleges or trade schools and pursuing degrees, certificates or licenses. The council announced seven scholarship awards of $2,000 each. Attending recipients named by the council included Ethan Hammond (son of Lt. John Hammond), Corinne Savage (daughter of Firefighter Steven Savage), and Corinne Watson (daughter of Assistant Chief Ryan Watson); the council listed additional recipients who were not present. The council said the scholarships are funded through contributions from current Lufkin Fire Department employees.
The council then presented a plaque to Adam Lowther in appreciation of his service on the council. Members thanked Lowther and made brief remarks.
The mayor administered the oath for William Price as the council welcomed him and his family to the dais.
The meeting moved on after the ceremonial items to the business agenda, including approval of meeting minutes and the rezoning public hearing.
