Suffern Central honors 27 teachers and staff with tenure

At a May 5 ceremony held before the regular board meeting, the Suffern Central School District recognized 27 teachers and staff who have earned tenure this year.
The reception featured principals from district schools calling recipients forward and describing their work. Angela Aguilar, principal of Cherry Lane Elementary School, recommended Stephanie Vanboris for tenure, praising Vanboris’s work with diverse learners and saying, “She loves her students deeply and is constantly thinking about how to support them, not just academically, but socially and emotionally.” Aguilar highlighted Vanboris’s creative visuals, scaffolding and patience in a self‑contained special‑education classroom.
Other principals presented groups of recipients and singled out program work and leadership: Theresa Ivy of Montebello emphasized classroom connection and coaching when introducing Rachel Stalcup and John Yanaco; Kelly Bonatti of RP Connor described colleagues’ implementation of MTSS and literacy initiatives; Andrew Trust, principal of Suffern Middle School, noted expanded MTSS work and language instruction at the middle level; and Paul Adler of Suffern High School lauded hands‑on science labs, counseling support and coaching contributions from high‑school recipients.
The reception highlighted recipients’ classroom practice and community engagement across buildings. Presenters described examples including dual‑language instruction, integrated co‑teaching, MTSS coordination, literacy programming and extracurricular leadership such as coaching and stage production work.
Superintendent Dr. Gunderson closed the reception, thanking mentors, families and the planning team and noting the event coincided with Teacher Appreciation Week. He said the board would approve the tenure list during the regular meeting; the approval was included in the consent agenda later in the meeting.
The district’s next regular board meeting is scheduled for May 19 in Hilburn, when the budget vote and board election will be held.
