Council appoints inaugural Youth Council members and waives residency requirement for one applicant

The City of York formally appointed three students as the inaugural members of a new Youth Council Committee during its May 5 meeting.
Council introduced Resolution 35 to establish the York City Youth Council Committee and named Denim Greenslade, Nia Stevens and Jada Gonzalez as members for the 2026–2027 program year. The resolution describes the committee’s purpose as elevating youth voices, offering leadership development, and giving students opportunities to address council and present ideas.
A council member moved to waive part of the residency requirement in article 19802(a) for one applicant while maintaining the grade requirement (10–12). The motion was seconded and the waiver passed on roll call. Council indicated the youth members’ official term will begin Sept. 1, 2026, and that the council will provide onboarding including monthly meetings and leadership development opportunities.
Clerk Thompson administered the oath of office to the three youth members that evening and council provided commemorative items and photo opportunities.
Council members and public commenters praised the initiative and encouraged broader civic engagement among young residents.
