Milton Area School District board deadlocks on filling vacancy after three rounds of nominations

Board member Eric Moser nominated Frank Kovilaritch and Board member Amy Waldron nominated Brett Hosterman during a contested selection process to fill the Milton Area School District board vacancy caused by Anthony Beachel’s resignation. The board interviewed the three applicants — Hosterman, Kovilaritch and John Broscious — during the meeting on Jan. 20.
During three rounds of nominations the board repeatedly split along roll-call votes. In the third round Kovilaritch received votes from Moser, Kevin Fry, Chistine Rantz and Josh Hunt, while Hosterman received votes from Joel Harris, Dr. Steph Strawser, Waldron and Amber Wendt; Broscious received a single vote from Hunt in earlier rounds. Moser said he nominated Kovilaritch because “he is a long-term community member and deeply rooted in business which brings valuable experience to the board.” Waldron said she nominated Hosterman, adding Hosterman “has invaluable experience in education and on the school board” and “is ready to contribute on the first day.”
Attorney Mike Wiley told the board that if members could not reach a decision the process would need to move to the next step. The board then voted 8-0 to close nominations; no final appointment was recorded in the meeting minutes.
Superintendent Dr. John Bickhart later noted the board would take next steps to fill the vacancy. The board entered an executive session at 8:11 p.m. to discuss legal matters and adjourned the executive session at 8:28 p.m.
