Superintendent: Attendance below target as district readies performing arts center

The superintendent delivered the State of the District report on April 24, saying the district’s year-to-date average daily attendance stood at about 96.9 percent and that current-month attendance fell by 0.6 percentage points since the March meeting. “Our target is 97 percent,” the superintendent said, framing that pre‑COVID level as the benchmark the district seeks to regain.
The superintendent said the district is working ‘‘very diligently at all of our school sites to encourage school attendance 100% of the time,’’ tying regular attendance to academic and social‑emotional success and to Strategic Commitment 4, which the district uses to guide engagement and support efforts.
During the report the superintendent recognized Milpitas Middle College High School student leaders who represented the district at the state level through the California Association of Student Leaders and asked that the student board representative speak briefly about the experience during the board report. The superintendent also highlighted recent honors from the Santa Clara County Office of Education’s multilingual pathways awards across four categories — home language development, biliteracy attainment pathway, program participation and the seal of biliteracy — and credited coordinator Shannon Souza and site educators for that work.
The superintendent reported that five district learners were honored by the Santa Clara County Alliance for Black Educators for service, history, culture and academic work; two of those students received scholarships.
Looking ahead to facilities and community use, the superintendent said the district will convene a Milpitas Unified performing arts center task force, made up of MUSD staff and performing‑arts experts, to determine program needs, procedures and staffing and to review technical systems such as lighting and sound. The task force is intended to prepare the center for public use in 2027, the superintendent said.
