Vinita council accepts Langston University beautification voucher and $10,000 SAFE grant; approves laptop purchase and pool schedule

At the May 5 meeting, Vinita officials approved several administrative items: acceptance of two grants or vouchers, authorization of equipment purchases, confirmation of pool hours and fees for the 2026 season, and submission of three nominees to the Oklahoma Municipal Assurance Group (OMAG) board of trustees.

City Administrator Prince told the council that Langston University offered a $2,000 voucher to help beautify Vinita for the Route 66 centennial; the voucher will be used with a local partner (TLC Gardening Center in Oklahoma City) to select plantings. The council voted to accept the donation.

Chief Johnson reported the city was awarded a $10,000 grant (referred to in the meeting as an AG or Oklahoma SAFE grant) and asked the council to accept the funding; the motion passed. Council then approved a motion to purchase laptops “not to exceed $10,000” using the approved funds; the purchase authorization passed by voice vote.

On parks operations, city staff presented the proposed pool schedule and fees: Tuesday through Saturday 11 a.m.–6 p.m., Sundays 2 p.m.–5 p.m. (family swim) with a $1 entry fee; pool parties were confirmed as after‑hours events. Staff cautioned the planned Memorial Day opening date was tentative pending work on pumps and other safety items; the council approved the schedule as presented.

The council also approved submitting three nominees for three‑year trustee positions at OMAG; staff reported incumbents had submitted support letters and indicated willingness to continue.
