Riverside honors crossing guard for heroism and proclaims Crime Victims Rights Week

The Riverside City Council presented a certificate of recognition on April 7 to Fremont Elementary crossing guard Ida Claudio for intervening to protect a student during an incident on Nov. 17, 2024.
Dr. Sosa praised Claudio’s quick action to stop potential harm and called the crossing guard’s courage ‘‘remarkable.’’ Claudio accepted the honor and, speaking through limited English, thanked the council and gave credit to her faith: "I'm very thankful to be here... and to my Lord Jesus Christ," she said.
The council also read a proclamation recognizing National Crime Victims Rights Week (declared for the week of April 19–25, 2026). Corina Vasquez, regional manager for the Riverside County Division of Victim Services, thanked the city for the proclamation and invited the public to a candlelight vigil on April 23 at the historic courthouse. Vasquez said the week’s events are intended to honor victims and support survivors and noted a short video about services and staff was shown to the council.
The council paused its regular agenda to present the awards and then resumed the meeting for public comment.
