Wyoming Area SD superintendent highlights student awards, attendance incentive and STEM success

The Wyoming Area School District board on April 28 heard a superintendent's report that highlighted student achievements and new incentives aimed at improving attendance.
Dr. Pollard, the district superintendent, told the board that front-office staff and a rail riders group visited second-grade classes to talk about career choices and that the district will participate in a rail riders game in June as part of the "Champ's Home Run Reading" program presented by Brett Rock. "Students who meet the criteria for perfect attendance will be eligible for a drawing to win a gift card," Dr. Pollard said, describing an incentive at the Wyoming Area Intermediate Center to reward regular attendance. She named Ellen Nemshick and Stella Reedy as winners for earlier marking periods and said winners for later marking periods will be announced.
The superintendent also reported that the Wyoming Area STEM (WA STEM) club competed March 26 in the statewide Keystone competition at King's College. The team presented a multifunctional desk designed to support students with ADHD and emotional challenges; Dr. Pollard named team members and co-chairs and congratulated the students for the work.
Dr. Pollard recognized the Wyoming Area Drama Club and Glee Society for their recent production of Frozen at the secondary center auditorium and thanked advisors Chuck Yarmine and Kate Megan. She also noted a first-grade patriotic concert on April 16 and thanked staff members who provided special assistance to students that evening.
The superintendent closed by calling up a list of students who received the Litter Hawk award and first-place prize in a district contest; she said there were "over 500 entries" and invited the winners to the front for recognition.
Earlier in the meeting, Mr. Alberti read additions to the communications report, listing recent hires and applications received. The board then approved the minutes of the combined meeting held March 24, 2026, by voice vote with ayes from members and no recorded opposition or abstentions.
The board proceeded to other routine business following the superintendent's report.
