Vienna council approves $149,008.32 for Meadowlane Park LED court lighting

The Vienna Town Council on May 19 approved spending $149,008.32 for new LED lighting at Meadowlane Park's tennis and basketball courts.
Project manager Dave Donahue described the existing 1990 lighting as dim and said the contract with Musco Lighting will replace four poles and fixtures with modern LED units to improve visibility for tennis, pickleball and basketball and to reduce energy use. "It will be upgraded to modern LED lighting, to improve visibility and ensure player safety," Donahue said, describing a player-activation button and an estimated 50% energy savings over time.
Council members asked whether existing poles could be reused and whether the proposal incorporated dark-sky or shielding features. Donahue said the town considered reusing poles but the new fixtures require taller poles (40 feet versus the existing 25 feet) and that Musco's proposal was not developed around dark-sky placement without additional adjustments to pole location. He noted the vendor provided lumens and spill diagrams in the meeting handouts.
Council member Springsteen moved to approve the Musco Lighting contract; the motion was seconded and carried by roll-call vote.
Councilors referenced positive experience with similar LED fields at Glendon Park and asked staff to ensure shielding and minimal spill are part of final installation plans. The town will proceed with procurement and installation as a CIP (capital improvement project) item previously approved by the council.
