Surry County DSS reports service gains, notes reunification can take up to a year

Sharon Schueneman, director of the Surry County Department of Social Services, delivered the department’s bi-monthly update at the April 20 Board of Commissioners meeting.
Schueneman reviewed progress over the past year across program areas including prevention, adult services, Food and Nutrition Services (food stamps), Medicaid, child support, foster care, and investigations and in-home services. She credited staff resilience and growth despite high pressure and heavy caseloads.
When Commissioner Melissa Hiatt asked whether the department receives outside support for reunification work and case management, Schueneman said Vanguard is available for long-distance cases but is not used often. She told the Board the reunification process can take as long as one year in some cases.
Commissioners thanked Schueneman and DSS staff for their work. The update was provided as an informational presentation; there was no formal action or vote tied to the update.
