Surry County proclaims National Library Week as Mount Airy library reports surge in use

The Surry County Board of Commissioners proclaimed April 19–25, 2026, as National Library Week and recognized library staff during its April 20 meeting in Dobson.
Polly Long, Workforce Initiative Coordinator for Mount Airy City Schools, told commissioners that more than 500 Mount Airy students recently visited the Mount Airy Public Library, receiving tours, library cards and a book to take home. Hattie Brintle of the Mount Airy Library Advisory Board reported that the renovated Mount Airy Public Library has welcomed 13,358 patrons so far this year and recorded 16,965 items checked out through April 20.
Chairman Bill Goins read the National Library Week proclamation and thanked library staff and volunteers in attendance. The proclamation highlights libraries’ roles as community hubs that support learning, job-seeking and economic opportunity and recognizes April 21 as National Library Workers Day and April 26 as National Librarian Day.
Library officials and school staff described an ongoing partnership that brings students to the library for tours and programming and noted the Blue Bear Café operating inside the library as a community asset. Commissioners praised the collaboration and encouraged residents to visit their local library.
The proclamation was approved as part of the consent agenda during the meeting. There was no formal vote recorded separate from consent approval. The Board closed the public comment period after hearing from those in attendance.
