Auburn’s city manager told the council Feb. 23 that a major storm‑drain line in the downtown parking lot serving Grocery Outlet and Ace Hardware collapsed during recent snowy conditions after a semi/trailer parked on top of the drain, creating a sinkhole.
City crews contracted towing to remove the tractor‑trailer and installed trench plates to stabilize the area and prevent further collapse. The manager said staff will bring an emergency action to the next council agenda to replace and repair the failed storm‑drain segment as quickly as possible.
Council discussion noted that such emergency infrastructure repairs can draw down available fund balances and highlighted the importance of continuing to pursue new revenue while managing regular maintenance needs. The city manager credited public‑works crews for the rapid response and said the item will return to the council as an emergency procurement/repair item for authorization.
The council did not take a formal vote on the repair during the Feb. 23 meeting; staff signaled the issue will appear on an upcoming agenda for formal approval and funding direction.
