Coachella council approves Enterprise fleet lease package, discusses bus needs for seniors

The Coachella City Council on Feb. 25 authorized the city manager to accept lease quotes from Enterprise Fleet Management to refresh several municipal vehicles and improve fuel efficiency.
City engineering staff recommended trading in older owned F-150 trucks and moving some staff vehicles to Ford Mavericks, arguing the smaller Mavericks would lower lease and fuel costs while still providing necessary tow capacity. “We’re actually reducing total fleet cost by switching to those vehicles,” Andrew, the city’s head engineer, told the council.
The staff recommendation authorized lease quotes for two 2026 Ford F-250s, four 2026 Ford Maverick XL Hybrids and seven 2026 Ford F-150s. Staff said implementing the leasing strategy is included in department budgets and that the trade schedule will improve resale and buy-back value on older units.
Council members also asked about passenger buses used for senior transportation. Staff said Enterprise could not provide monthly bus leases but could sell a bus through its system; the city reported two newer SunLine buses (12-seat models) and an older 22-seat bus that staff recently refurbished and made operational. City staff and council discussed using an existing grant line item for senior transportation (about $500,000 with programmatic funding) as a funding source for a future purchase; staff said they would return with options and cost estimates.
Vote: Mayor Stephen A. Hernandez moved the authorization; a second was recorded and the council approved the lease authorization by roll call. Clerk roll-call entries recorded affirmative votes from Council Member Perez, Council Member Delgado, Council Member Villachan, Mayor Pro Tem Figueroa and Mayor Hernandez.
What’s next: Staff will return with detailed cost options and the presentation slides and will work with finance staff on bus purchase options, including quotes for both small and large buses and a plan to present the options to SGC grant administrators if the council wishes to pursue grant-funded bus acquisition.
