County wildfire coordinator role described as tool to streamline mitigation and grant wins

Makon said the program provides about $151,000 per county (14‑month allocation in 2025) and directs coordinators to support CWPP development, mapping and grant development. “The role is about building structure so wildfire mitigation can work and scale effectively and efficiently,” she told the board.
Local outcomes presented included establishment of six new nationally recognized Firewise communities, stronger coordination with CAL FIRE and local fuel mitigation groups, and assistance securing more than $100 million statewide (presenters’ aggregated figure) for mitigation projects where coordinators operate. Supervisors asked whether participation in Firewise communities can yield homeowners’ insurance discounts; Makon said being in a Firewise community can help individual insurability but insurance underwriting is company‑specific.
The board thanked the presenter and emphasized the coordinator’s role in channeling grant activity and reducing duplication among agencies. Makon highlighted an April 29 Firewise mini‑fair with CAL FIRE and others to boost public engagement.
