The Lakewood Arts Commission reviewed its rotating art-show schedule and public-art installations, including a July 20 reception for the MP Auto Art Show and a plan to pair that quarter with Summerfest activities Aug. 15. Commissioners reported that student signal-box art finalists have been chosen and that staff will work with Laurie Davenport to prepare templates and wraps for eight signal boxes before the rainy season.
Commissioners also discussed a proposal to bring public art to a tall concrete barrier near the Nyanza/Gravelly Lake roundabout over Clover Creek. A member suggested that the barrier is visible and at risk of tagging and proposed mosaics, murals or attaching artist panels similar to a Pierce County project in Spanaway. The commission noted technical and funding constraints, and one commissioner suggested exploring panel installation as a quicker alternative to painting directly on the barrier.
Commissioners praised recent installations such as wraps and vinyl treatments that improved the appearance of local utility boxes and noted that public response and photography at the Wards Lake installation were very positive. The commission agreed to research technical options and funding for the mural/panel project and to revisit the item during the 2027 project planning cycle.
