The Lakewood Arts Commission finalized its recommendation for a sculpture at the roundabout where Nyanza meets Gravelly Lake Drive and is preparing a memo to send to City Council ahead of a joint commission presentation set for Sept. 14.
Sally Martinez, who identified herself as a city events staff member, said she presented the commission’s recommendation to Roxanne and that Roxanne was pleased with the proposal. “Roxanne was very happy with it,” Martinez said during the meeting. The commission plans to include the sculpture item on the agenda for the joint commission meeting the week after Labor Day and will determine which commissioners will speak at that event.
Commission members discussed placement details and noted trees at the site that may affect visibility. They also said the recommendation will be formally presented to City Council in September and will be discussed at two regular commission meetings before the joint session so members can coordinate remarks.
No formal vote on funding or contract award was recorded at the meeting; the item remains at the recommendation stage pending the joint commission presentation and any subsequent council action.
The commission said it will continue to refine presentation materials and confirmed the Sept. 14 date for the joint meeting with City Council.
