Vienna council defers vote on proposed meals‑tax increase until August

The Vienna Town Council voted unanimously Jan. 27 to defer consideration of a proposed amendment to Town Code Chapter 6 that would raise the meals tax from 3% to 4% for 10 years.
Mayor Linda J. Colbert introduced the item as a significant budget decision and said she recommended deferral “so that we ensure to do our due diligence and make a good decision for our community.” Council member Springsteen moved to postpone the matter to Aug. 25, 2025; Council member Anderson seconded and the motion carried on a roll call of ayes.
Council members debated whether to act now or wait for more economic clarity. Council member Baldwin urged caution on behalf of residents who work for the federal government, citing recent reporting about potential changes to telework policies that might affect commuting and local restaurant demand. Baldwin said in that climate “it would not be prudent for us to lock in a taxing policy now.”
Council members said the extra time will allow staff to assemble additional financial analyses and for council to hold more deliberations. The council set the next review date to Aug. 25, 2025; no final revenue projection or ordinance text was adopted at the Jan. 27 meeting.
What happens next: Staff will gather additional information and return the item to a future agenda for further public discussion and a possible vote in August 2025.
