Board gets updates on Cherokee High replacement and other projects; community asks about reuse and traffic

At the Sept. 18 work session, Mr. Morse presented the district's monthly capital outlay report, noting the Cherokee High School replacement project is on schedule and within budget with exterior work, landscaping and sidewalks progressing.
"The project is currently on schedule and within budget," Mr. Morse said, listing ongoing work at several sites: Creekview High School finishing interior gym areas, River Ridge High School CMU wall and MEP rough‑in progress, Sequoia High School athletic facility work and utility relocation, Teasley Middle School curb and gutter for a bus lane, and Woodstock High School flooring and landscaping activities.
Board members relayed community interest in the future of the current Cherokee High School building and campus. Ms. Poole noted many residents asked whether the old site could return to an elementary school footprint (a restored Canton Elementary was mentioned). She also raised traffic concerns for the new Cherokee High campus, asking whether there would be a traffic signal on MLK and where student driver and parent drop‑off access would be located.
The superintendent said the district is conducting focus groups with parents, staff and partners to gather input about future uses for the current Cherokee High facilities and the new campus transition. Mr. Morse and staff said they are coordinating with school leadership and booster clubs on facility timelines and community communication.
The work session adjourned and the board planned to reconvene at 7 p.m. for the regular meeting.
