Board names Johnston Elementary playground 'Johnston Acres'

The Cherokee County School Board approved the superintendent's recommendation Aug. 21 to name Johnston Elementary School’s new playground "Johnston Acres." The board voted unanimously after staff said the recommendation followed the district’s naming policy and an ad hoc naming committee chaired by Dr. Laurie Etheridge, principal of Johnston Elementary School.
According to staff, the committee — made up of faculty, staff, parents and community members — recommended the name to honor former principal Laura Akers. Completion of the playground and a ribbon cutting are expected to take place in September, staff said.
A board member moved the name-selection motion and a second was recorded; the chair called the vote and members approved it unanimously. The superintendent and staff will work with school leadership to finalize dedication logistics.
