Students return from SCOPE; Fayetteville Middle and High school delegates recognized

Students who represented Fayetteville City at the Tennessee School Boards Association SCOPE conference described their debate topics and takeaways during the board's May meeting.

Natalie Austin, a student delegate, said her class debated a proposal that would require every student to participate in at least one extracurricular activity; she told the board her group argued against mandatory participation, saying it would "betray the integrity of these clubs." Maya March and other delegates described debates over substituting club sports for physical education and making world language an elective. The board presented certificates to the participants and announced that Maya March is the Fayetteville nominee for South Central District student of the year.

Why it matters: The SCOPE program gives students a structured forum to research and debate education policies and develop civic skills. Board members praised the students' confidence and civil discourse and encouraged continued participation in student leadership opportunities.

The students also reported local school events and upcoming dates—benchmarks, awards days and finals—and teachers were recognized during teacher appreciation week. The chair told the students the board was proud of their representation and encouraged them to consider continued civic engagement.

What comes next: Student delegates were advised to keep pursuing leadership opportunities; the board will learn more about the district nominee process for the South Central District competition later in the year.
