City officials received a technical update on the Lower Canyon Pipeline Project from Jones and Demille project lead Garrick Wilden and VanCon representative Nick Gold.
Wilden told the council that a key design challenge required changing pipe materials: ductile iron could not be certified to the project's required 900 PSI, so the team selected steel pipe with an epoxy lining for durability and corrosion resistance. He said internal coating and epoxy application at weld joints, particularly on smaller pipe sections, created quality-control complications that have delayed the schedule by about eight weeks and pushed overall completion into the fall.
Project contractors have completed improvements to hydroelectric facilities and expect water to return to the distribution system in early May. Wilden and Gold described quality-control measures in place, including epoxy coatings on the interior and exterior of pipes, cathodic protection to reduce corrosion, and nondestructive weld testing using X-ray and magnetic particle inspection; they reported no failures during testing.
The project team said final installation work, site cleanup and erosion-control measures will continue later in the year. No formal action was requested of the council during the presentation; the update was informational.
