The Town of Cave Creek recognized student winners of a new Cactus Charlie water-conservation poster contest during its May 5 council meeting, part of outreach organized by the Utility Advisory Board and the Desert Awareness Committee.
Sean (utility/board) told council the contest grew from advisory-board outreach and that several schools participated. Diane of the Desert Awareness Committee introduced winners from four schools and a homeschool participant; first-place winners Penelope (Black Mountain Elementary, K-3) and Reagan (Carefree Christian Academy, fourth grade) presented their posters and described small water-saving actions such as turning off taps, shortening showers and combining laundry loads.
"My poster says save water. Water is gold," Penelope told the council. Reagan displayed a poster with Cactus Charlie and said, "I have turned off the tap. It's a snap." Council thanked the students and invited attendees to view the artwork after the meeting.
Why it matters: The program is intended to build long-term water-conservation habits among young residents as the state faces prolonged drought. Officials said they plan to expand next year to include a high-school writing competition to engage older students.
