Clovis board celebrates student wins and approves multiple student trip requests

The Clovis Municipal Schools Board of Education used its regular meeting to applaud students’ recent competitive successes and to approve multiple travel requests so teams can pursue national competitions.
Board President (Speaker 1) opened the meeting by recognizing a string of student achievements, then invited groups to present trip requests and reports. Stefanyta Bloomer, a G/T teacher (Speaker 14), said student Grayson placed first in the state National History Day documentary and asked for permission to pursue the national contest in College Park, Maryland. ‘‘He introduced himself. He was dressed professionally…and the judges said they felt important when Grayson walked in that room,’’ Bloomer told the board, outlining the educational value of the national competition.
Clovis High School’s band program (Speaker 15) reported superior ratings at Music Performance Assessment and said the New Mexico Public Education Department nominated the band to perform in the 2027 Memorial Day Parade in Washington, D.C.; the director asked the board to consider a future trip request and noted fundraising would be necessary. FCCLA chapter leaders (Speakers 19–24) described winning back‑to‑back state chapter championships, submitting 2,300 volunteer hours and qualifying members for nationals; the chapter outlined fundraising and parental involvement plans.
Powerlifting students (Speakers 28–29) and JROTC representatives (Speakers 30–31) also briefed the board on state placements, season statistics and a summer leadership camp request. JROTC asked the board to revisit a policy that currently restricts cadet use of the high‑school track and football field for weekly activities.
After hearing the reports, the board took up seven travel items together. Secretary Martin moved and Vice President Hamilton seconded approval of travel items 1 through 7; the motion carried on a voice vote. President Cordova congratulated the student groups and wished them luck while noting fundraising and logistics would follow.
The board did not take any additional votes tied to conditions or funding during the meeting; staff said they will return with formal trip requests and fundraising plans as needed.
