Madera County Assessment Appeal Board postpones multiple hearings to Aug. 6

The Madera County Assessment Appeal Board voted May 7 to postpone multiple property assessment hearings to Aug. 6 after attorneys and staff asked for more time to review recently exchanged materials.
Colton Ballinger, an associate at Fenimore Law in Fresno, appeared on behalf of Todd D. Phillips, co-trustee of the David and Patricia Berry Trust and said he was present to monitor and represent the clients’ interests. "My name is Colton Ballinger. I'm here from Fenimore Law, in Fresno on behalf of Todd d Phillips, co trustee of the David and Patricia Berry Trust," Ballinger told the board, and requested an additional continuance so the clients could review a recent proposal.
The board’s assessor-appraiser, Brian, told members he had spoken with the representatives and asked for one more continuance to allow updated values and materials to be reviewed. "I will ask for 1 promise this time 1 more continuance. Till the August meeting, and I believe we should have, it resolved 1 way or other," Brian said. After a motion and second, the board approved the continuance by voice vote; the chair recorded votes as "Aye" with no opposition.
Earlier in the meeting a member moved to approve the consent calendar as a single motion; that motion passed unanimously. Later, the board agreed to take items 5a, 5b and 5c together and moved those items to the August meeting by unanimous voice vote.
Staff told the board that more appeals were filed this year than usual and flagged a single large landowner with more than 20 separate appeals related to vineyard property. Board staff said that although there are many line items they will likely be handled together for efficiency.
The board did not take evidence or rule on the merits of the appealed valuations at this meeting; the postponements were scheduling actions to allow additional review. The board adjourned after staff reported no further business.
The Assessment Appeal Board is scheduled to reconvene on Aug. 6 to address the continued items.
