Wheeling resident recounts recent ICE apprehensions, urges police transparency

Jennifer Abon Alcantar identified herself during public comment at the March 16 meeting and said recent local immigration enforcement actions have directly affected Wheeling residents, including neighbors and volunteers who coach youth sports.

"These past few weeks have been particularly difficult in family support," Abon Alcantar said, describing two local residents taken by immigration authorities in recent weeks and saying one incident was captured on a neighbor’s camera. She urged the board to consider how village decisions and police policies affect community members and to sustain transparency around systems such as cameras and any drone or "flock" technology.

Abon Alcantar asked the village to improve availability of know‑your‑rights resources beyond social media posts and said her group will follow up with an email proposing safeguards used elsewhere, including an Arlington Heights contract addendum that imposes penalties for misuse.

President Harker and trustees thanked the speaker. No board action or staff directive was recorded in response at the meeting.

Separately during public comment, a resident identified in the transcript as Tom Debit asked the board to reconsider how a Feb. 2 approval of $225,000 under a TIF/TIFF buildout grant was awarded, asking whether future awards could require hiring Wheeling residents or using local contractors, and suggested additional programs for rent/mortgage assistance, jobs and tree planting. Trustees acknowledged the concerns; staff and trustees discussed outreach and publicity for existing programs but no formal changes were made during the meeting.
