Plan Commission approves Riverwalk sculpture and park improvements after floodplain review

The Plan Commission on May 5 approved a conditional use permit and site plan to install a sculpture with seating, landscaping, a 5-foot concrete paver walkway, security cameras and lighting on a peninsula next to the kayak launch on the Riverwalk.
Staff told the commission that a floodplain analysis was completed and concluded the proposed improvements would not impact the floodplain. The site plan materials showed the sculpture location, surrounding landscape beds and a walking path; staff recommended approval with listed conditions.
At the public hearing a community member, identified as Michelle, clarified that the pedestal pictured would be replaced by natural stone and described the sculpture as "a poured bronze piece," noting the artist’s Guggenheim fellowship and participation in the Whitney Biennial. "It's actually cast bronze," Michelle said. Chair and staff noted the Park Commission had previously approved the project unanimously.
After public comment the commission closed the hearing and voted to approve the conditional use and the site plan by voice vote. Chair called the project "another nice addition to the art walk downtown."
