Council approves land lease and MOU with Verifiber to bring fiber service to Eagle Pass

The Eagle Pass City Council unanimously approved a land-lease agreement and memorandum of understanding with Verifiber on May 15 that will allow the fiber company to place cabinets and related equipment on a city-owned property near the recycling center.
Staff described a lease for a roughly 20-by-25-foot (500 square feet) equipment footprint with a monthly lease amount of $8,800 and terms covering construction, maintenance, utility locates and responsibility for repairs. Jeremy McDonald, a market development engineer with Verifiber, introduced the company and said it plans to prioritize aerial construction where feasible and to coordinate closely with public works to minimize disruptions.
Council members asked whether the site would affect recycling-center operations and how Verifiber would handle underground work and repairs. Staff said the location was selected in coordination with the city’s engineer and that Verifiber would shift placement within the property as needed to avoid conflicts.
"We want to bring our fiber service to the city of Eagle Pass," McDonald said. "We think it's a great opportunity for us to service the citizens and support continued growth." Council approved the agreement after the presentation and clarifying questions.
Staff said the lease includes standard protections requiring the company to notify the city, get locates, and financially be responsible for repairs if their work damages underground utilities.
