The Vienna Town Council on Sept. 8 approved a contract not to exceed $348,000 with Tyler Technologies to reconstruct the town’s police dispatch and records-management systems and provide cloud storage services.
Police Chief Morris told council that network issues had exposed vulnerabilities in the department’s dispatch and records infrastructure and that moving to a cloud-hosted system would improve security, maintainability and long-term resiliency. Chief Morris said the immediate implementation cost would be paid from seized-asset funds and that annual maintenance costs would rise as cloud-security services are added.
Council questions focused on confidentiality and the source of funding. Chief Morris said that while some vendor materials are confidential, the substance of the contract and the decision to move to the cloud are not confidential and that staff expects to continue to rely on county and regional partners for some services.
The motion to authorize payment not to exceed $348,000 to Tyler Technologies was moved and seconded and passed by a council majority.
The approval directs the police department to proceed with the cloud migration and to provide updated maintenance-cost estimates for future budgets.
