Carmel Elementary named a National School of Distinction; longtime chief of staff to retire

The Cherokee County Board of Education began its December work session with a tribute to Carmel Elementary School and a personnel announcement. Superintendent Dr. Davis said Carmel Elementary was one of two schools in Georgia selected as a National School of Distinction and asked the board and public to "join me in recognizing Carmel Elementary School," praising principal Lisa Rich and the school's staff.
Dr. Davis highlighted that the Georgia Department of Education had recognized the school and said the district learned that, of roughly 49,000 Title I schools nationwide, about 100 receive a national school‑of‑distinction honor. "This recognition ... goes to every bus driver, every school nutrition employee, the maintenance team, the front office team, the nurse, custodians and school police who keep the school safe," she said.
The superintendent also acknowledged the retirement of Mike McGowan, the district's longtime chief of staff and a 29‑year Cherokee County Schools employee. McGowan was later invited to give reports during the session and was introduced by the superintendent as the district's chief of staff.
The board did not take formal action at the meeting on either item; the recognition was presented as part of the superintendent's opening remarks and McGowan's retirement was noted for public record.
