The Cherokee County School Board unanimously approved a 2026 legislative priorities resolution Dec. 11 that asks the local legislative delegation to pursue a limit on the annual growth of the local property‑tax digest subject to the school tax.
Staff described the measure as a proposal to tie allowable annual residential property‑value growth to a rolling 30‑year average of historical tax‑digest data. The resolution is framed as an effort to protect homeowners from rapid valuation increases while seeking to preserve the district’s ability to serve students and retain staff.
During the briefing, the superintendent said the policy is consistent with prior board tax‑relief efforts. He noted the board reduced the millage rate in 2022—an action the district says reduced taxpayers’ burden by $23 million annually—and pointed to an expanded senior tax exemption that the district estimates is saving taxpayers nearly $20 million a year.
A board member moved to adopt the resolution; it was seconded and approved unanimously. There was no substantive amendment to the draft resolution during discussion.
