Cherokee County School Board unanimously approves names for new Cherokee High athletic facilities

The Cherokee County School Board voted unanimously Dec. 11 to approve names for major athletic areas at the new Cherokee High School, honoring local alumni and community donors.
The superintendent presented the naming committee’s recommendation that the gymnasium, the baseball/softball complex and the practice field be named for alumnus and philanthropist Ken White (class of 1959) and that the new football field be named for Tommy Baker, for whom the district's existing field has been named since 1958. The board also approved calling the new venue "Warrior Stadium." Families representing both the Baker and White families were on hand for recognition.
Board members praised the committee’s process and the emphasis on preserving school traditions while creating new ones. Board member Kelly Poole said the motion reflected “the thoughtfulness, the deliberate examination of the artifacts at Cherokee High School,” and thanked the committee and community for their work.
The motion to adopt the naming recommendations was made and seconded, and the board voted unanimously to approve the names. The district noted the names will apply to the corresponding facilities when the new Cherokee High campus opens.
The approval concluded without further conditions; there was no amendment to the recommendations and no recorded roll‑call tally beyond the chair’s announcement that the motion carried unanimously.
