Residents tout bike‑safety events and warn of risks from proposed warehouse at 933 S. Riverside

During the public forum at the Elmhurst City Council meeting on May 4, Michael (Mike) Licisro of the Walk N Rollers outlined a series of bike and pedestrian safety events for National Bike Month, highlighting school‑focused Walk & Roll to School Day on May 6 (participation by all Elmhurst schools), a community ride May 15 and the Elmhurst Cycling Classic on June 6. Licisro said the group is working with Elmhurst Police to educate the public about legal distinctions for e‑bikes and e‑scooters.

"We're trying to educate as much as we can," Licisro said, noting Elmhurst TV will film events and urging residents to encourage students and volunteer at activities.

Later in public comment, resident David Terrell raised concerns about a proposed 34‑warehouse trucking facility on the former Clarion Hotel property at 933 S. Riverside that is currently under zoning committee review. Terrell said the site sits near Salt Creek and Salt Creek Elementary School and warned of hazards from heavy truck traffic at the Route 83/Riverside intersection, potential hazardous‑materials runoff into Salt Creek, and flood vulnerability. He also said the developer had previously sold warehouses to federal agencies, and asked the council to scrutinize zoning decisions carefully.

"Should Elmhurst allow heavy truck traffic through this hazardous intersection before a safer intersection is built?" Terrell asked, urging careful attention in zoning deliberations.

What's next: Licisro's group will host several May events and the council and staff have been made aware of neighborhood concerns about 933 S. Riverside; the zoning committee will continue its review and residents expect additional notices and opportunities for input.
