Board ratifies Jana Barfield as Jackson County Department of Health administrator

The Jackson County Board of County Commissioners unanimously ratified the appointment of Jana Barfield as administrator of the Florida Department of Health in Jackson County.
Becky Keefe, chief of medical health services, introduced Barfield and outlined her statewide experience leading clinical quality and nursing practice across Florida’s county health departments and her prior role as interim administrator in Seminole County, where she managed more than 110 employees and a $13 million budget.
Barfield, who said she began her public-health career at the Jackson County Health Department in 2007 and is a lifelong resident of Grand Ridge, told the board: "I look forward to working with you guys and community partners to promote and protect and improve the health of Jackson County." She confirmed her residence in Grand Ridge when asked.
Commissioners moved and seconded the ratification motion and welcomed Barfield to the position; the board thanked staff for bringing a local candidate with state-level experience.
Barfield’s appointment was presented as a concurrence request to be ratified by the board; staff confirmed the appointment and the board voted to approve it during the meeting. The board did not discuss compensation or operational changes during the ratification.
The next step is for Barfield to assume duties in the county health department as announced by state health staff and to begin coordination with county leaders and community partners on public-health priorities.
