St Clair County Schools board adopts resolution directing staff to prepare program and staffing reductions

The St Clair County Schools board unanimously adopted a yearly "reduction resolution" directing district staff to prepare recommendations for program and staffing reductions in response to financial uncertainty and declining enrollment.

Board members voted to adopt the resolution after a presentation framing the measure as a preparatory step rather than a set of immediate layoffs. A board member said staff will bring back concrete recommendations in March and April; examples discussed included converting some full-time positions to 0.75 or 0.8 full-time equivalents and reviewing the district's undesignated fund-balance policy (currently stated at 30–60 days).

The resolution was introduced during the regular meeting and passed by voice vote with every recorded member voting in favor. The presiding officer called for the motion and the board adopted it as presented.

Board members emphasized the resolution is intended to give administrators authority to evaluate staffing and program needs and to return with specific proposals. "We might go from full time to 0.75 or 0.8," a board member said, explaining how the district could right-size staffing where enrollment has dipped.

The discussion further noted that the district's fund-balance policy and comparisons with peer districts will inform recommendations. The board did not adopt specific position eliminations or dollar amounts at the meeting; members said those details will be presented later and subject to further board review.

Next steps: district administrators will prepare recommended changes and present them to the board in forthcoming meetings in March and April for formal action.
