The board unanimously certified the executive‑session action and then opened the public meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance. A presenter read the names of students and parents called forward for recognition; staff presented certificates to students for participation in the All‑Virginia Elementary Chorus. “This is for the All Virginia Elementary Chorus presented to Maya Brown, Chorus member from the Leadland Elementary School,” a staff presenter said while calling the honorees forward.
In personnel and procedural business, the board approved the April 7, 2026 minutes and voted to pay bills without recorded opposition. The board also approved reported resignations and retirements and a slate of new hires and transfers. Finance and facilities updates followed. The chair reported the April sales‑tax deposit as $337,009.00 and referred members to the maintenance and expenditure reports; the chair thanked staff for completing the renovation of the gym. The staff member also said the district will install new lights at Castlewood High School’s football stadium and replace seats and carpet in the Lebanon High School little theater this summer.
The board also announced upcoming events and dates: a business partnership luncheon on May 7 at the Russell County Career and Technology Center, graduation ceremonies May 17 for Castlewood, Lebanon and Honaker high schools, the career‑tech graduation May 21, and May 29 as the last day of school. A special called meeting is scheduled for May 20 at 4 p.m., and the next regular meeting is June 2 at 5 p.m.
Recognitions closed the substantive part of the agenda. Staff honored Nikki Roberts of Logan Primary School as Teacher of the Month and recognized support staff (listed in the meeting as Chelsea Breeding, Michelle Tharpe/Clark and Tiffany Deal) for their work in special education classrooms. The meeting concluded after a motion to adjourn carried without opposition.
