Committee backs resolution urging state to extend optional disability coverage to probation officers

The Ulster County Law Enforcement and Public Safety Committee on May 5 voted to support state legislation that would add optional disability coverage for county probation officers.
Director Igerado spoke in support of Resolution 277, describing probation officers as peace officers who work in the community and face hazards including weapons and fentanyl. "Probation officers are peace officers...we're out in the community with people who have weapons, fentanyl...all sorts of dangerous situations," he said, and urged the county to back the bill as it goes to the state legislature.
Committee members discussed whether local state representatives had cosponsored the measures; the committee said it would check sponsorship and consider sending supporting letters if needed. Chair Clinton noted the resolution was put forward by state Senator Hinchey.
The committee carried the measure and will forward it with its recommendation to the full legislative session.
