U-46 board names Stephanie Flores student advisor, re-elects Melissa Owens and elects officers

The Elgin School District U-46 Board of Education on May 4 confirmed Stephanie Flores as the student advisor for the 2026–27 school year and honored outgoing student board member Danvi Dapanani.
After the nominations and brief remarks, the board took a roll-call vote to approve the administration’s recommendation for Stephanie Flores as the next student advisor; the motion carried unanimously. The new student advisor was sworn in by the board’s secretary pro tem; the oath included commitments to follow constitutions and laws and to represent district constituents honestly and equally.
The board also conducted officer elections under the procedures explained by the board secretary. Melissa Owens was nominated and elected to continue as board president; Shonda Schwartz was elected vice president; and Kate Thomas was elected secretary pro tem. The secretary referenced board policy 2:1:10 limiting officer terms to one year at a time as the procedural framework for the vote.
Outgoing student board member Danvi Dapanani received a plaque and offered brief remarks: "It really has been one of the best things I've been able to do in high school," Dapanani said, thanking the board for the opportunity.
What happens next: Stephanie Flores will assume the student-advisor responsibilities for 2026–27; officers will continue leading the board for the coming year and the board will move seats at the next meeting as indicated.
