U-46 board approves $41.99 million Elgin elementary construction and dozens of contracts

The Elgin School District U-46 Board of Education on May 4 approved a multi-package construction award for a new Elgin Elementary School totaling $41,988,841.91 and signed off on a slate of additional facilities and equipment contracts.

Administration read the recommended low bidders for each trade package and asked the board to authorize district staff to execute related documents. The board approved the construction package by unanimous roll-call vote. Board members also approved a $2,885,773 contract for South Elgin High School’s intercom and clock system replacement and a $160,600 abatement contract for Kimball Middle School.

Superintendent Suzanne Johnson and operations staff said the project awards are charged to the capital projects fund and were included in the FY26–27 budget plans. The board flagged one administrative pricing error on the South Elgin intercom item; the chair noted a $40 discrepancy that was corrected on the record before the vote: "We noticed a price discrepancy from an administrative error on this, where the numbers were inverted. This was a difference of $40 on the board document," the chair stated on the dais.

Other approved construction and operations actions included multiple site and trade awards (excavation, masonry, roofing, HVAC and electrical packages) and routine abatement and renovation contracts. The board also approved a change order that reduced the cost of the Streamwood High boiler/pump/electrical replacement project by $224,398.

What happens next: administration will finalize contracts and proceed with project mobilization; the capital work is scheduled over the next fiscal years, and the district said it will monitor timelines and report back to the board as projects progress.
