Council OKs $2,500 in tourism funding for Mega Gymnastics state meet and approves opioid-abatement outreach spending

The McAlester City Council approved two community-focused funding requests intended to support local events and public-health outreach.
Owners Michael Tanner and Amber Kinkade requested $2,500 from the tourism events budget to help host the novice state gymnastics championships at the Boys & Girls Club, an event they said will bring roughly 638 athletes and accompanying spectators to McAlester. Staff explained the tourism board reviewed promotion and impact estimates; because the tourism board lacked a quorum the item was placed before council and the council approved the funding by roll call.
Separately, Stacy Gourley, site director for Behavioral Health, asked permission to use opioid-abatement funds to provide pizza and light refreshments at a planned community "lunch and learn" series focused on stigma reduction, overdose recognition and Narcan training. Gourley said the food is intended to increase attendance; council approved using the allocated opioid-abatement funds for refreshments.
Both motions passed on roll call with all present voting yes.
