Colonial School District officials and partners from Nemours Children’s Health told the school board that districtwide school-based wellness centers are providing measurable care and helping students stay in class, but that expanding the model faces funding and billing hurdles.
At the board meeting, Nemours pediatric nurse practitioner Natalie Casper said nearly 56% of Pleasantville Elementary students were enrolled in the school’s wellness services and that the center logged 395 visits this school year for 151 individual students. “We have seen over 50 physicals this year at Pleasantville,” Casper said, and the center reported behavioral-health contacts as well: “Our behavioral health therapist… provided mental health support… 163 visits this year for 17 students,” she said.
