Trustee Dan Turner resigns; board declares Zone 4 vacancy and outlines appointment timeline

The Blaine County School District No. 61 board of trustees declared a vacancy in Zone 4 on May 5 after Trustee Dan Turner resigned effective April 30.

Board chair read Turner’s resignation letter to trustees and praised his six years of service, noting Turner’s advocacy for students, staff and fiscal stewardship. The chair said Turner plans to remain on the district finance committee. Quoting the letter, the chair read Turner’s closing line: “Still in the fight, Dan Turner.”

The chair said the board will begin the process to identify and appoint a qualified individual to serve the remainder of the term in accordance with Idaho law and district policy. The board described the schedule it will follow: the search will begin within Zone 4; if the board cannot find an appointee from Zone 4 within 90 days it will have 30 days to consider applicants from anywhere in the county; if the board remains unable to appoint, the Blaine County commissioners will make the appointment.

During the discussion the chair listed qualities the board is seeking in applicants, including a commitment to public education, financial and budgetary experience, a collaborative leadership style, long-term strategic thinking, sound judgment, professionalism, community engagement and the ability to commit time to the role. The chair noted that trustees govern through policy, budget adoption, and oversight rather than by managing day-to-day operations.

Action: The board moved to declare the vacancy for Zone 4; the motion carried.

What happens next: The district said it will post the vacancy and share application materials and a description of Zone 4 on its website and in agenda documents. Residents of Zone 4 are encouraged to apply; the board said it looks forward to filling the seat and hearing from prospective trustees.

The meeting then proceeded to an executive session to consider labor contract matters.
